Report: Turkish fears over possible Syrian-Israeli peace
Turkey-Regional, Politics, 1/4/2000
Al-Sharq radio noted Turkish fears in the ME region, especially after
Barak assumed power in Israel. The radio said that these fears stem from
a possible peace agreement between Syria and israel which will weaken
the Turkish position in the region , especially as there are talks in
Israel, under Barak 's labor party of a new Middle East, where there is
not such a drastic need for such a strong military alliance existing
between Israel and Turkey.
The radio's correspondent asserted that the source of the Turkish concern goes back to the fact that in case Israel reaches peace with Syria, Israel will, eventually change its political priorities towards the Arabs in a way that might affect the substantial meaning and objectives of the Turkish-Israeli military agreement signed in 1996.
The correspondent added that Turkey has recognized that the US is behind the changes taking place in Israel and the results it will bring regionally, a matter which makes Turkey think that it is important to take part in a regional role in the coming changes in the region.
During the recent days Turkish statements have been falling in this context, either by expressing satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere restored to the region or in showing its interest in taking part in the Middle East peace process' multilateral talks, especially those relating to economic growth, water, transportation and communications.
