Report: Border issue, the most difficult in the Syrian-Israeli negotiations
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/4/2000
The al-Ayam daily issued in the occupied Arab territories on Monday quoted the Israeli daily Haartez as saying in its Sunday issue that the question of fixing borders will be the most difficult in the peace talks between Israel and Syria.
In its Monday issue, the al-Ayam daily added that according to Haartez Barak will try to postpone discussions over the issue of borders as much as he can until he knows what Syria will give to Israel in the areas of waters, security arrangements and normalization.
The Palestinian paper reported that the negotiating Israeli delegation will ask during the current round of talks for the international borders of 1923 as permanent borders between Syria and Israel by having sovereignty and control over the Banias waters springs which are situated on the Syrian side, in line with Israel's rights to the waters.
The paper added that the controversial problem, in particular will be controlling of Ghajar village and al-Wazzani river springs, which partly feed al-Hasbani river.
