U.N. to go on creating world peace, development, Annan says
Regional, Politics, 1/3/2000

"The world is entering a special New Year with a momentous number, the year 2000, in which we continue to share a common destiny, and we can master it to bring about sustainable peace and development if we face it together," said U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The world had moved into a new millennium, many of us had much to be thankful for, Annan said a message for the new millennium.

"This is because most of the world is at peace, most of us are better educated than our parents or grandparents, and we can also expect to live longer lives, with greater freedom and a wider range of choices," he said.

The U.N. chief warned that though a new century would bring new hope, it would also bring new dangers, or old ones in a new and alarming form.

"No one could know for sure how serious each of these dangers, caused by some people not respecting state frontiers, would be, but now we were sharing a common destiny more than ever before, and could master the world only if we were facing it together through the United Nations," he said.

"Through the United Nations, we are working together to preserve peace, to outlaw weapons that kill and maim indiscriminately, to bring mass murderers and war criminals to justice. Through the United Nations, we are working together to defeat AIDS and other epidemics; to control climate change; to make clean air and water available to everyone, Annan noted," he said.

"Through the United Nations, we are working together to make human rights a reality for everyone, to give all human beings real choices in life, and a real say in decisions that affect their lives, he continued."

"The U.N. was working all these areas for the peoples of the world, but it could do little without them; on the other hand, it could work much better for the sake of the world's sustainable peace, development, and well-being, with their help and ideas," stressed U.N. chief.
