Imam of a Kosovo mosque lauds Morocco's backing
Morocco-Yugoslavia, Culture, 1/3/2000

The Imam of the mosque of the Kosovo town of Mitrovica (45 km north of Pristina) paid tribute to Morocco, during Friday's weekly prayers, for its solidarity and backing for the Kosovar people.

"The initiative of the Kingdom of Morocco is in line with the spirit of solidarity and cohesion taught by Islam," said Rexhep Lushta.

The Imam expressed congratulations to King Mohammed VI and to the Moroccan people on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr, the feast marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, that will be celebrated end of next week.

The Imam called on the Muslim world to build more mosques in Kosovo to consolidate Islam in the Balkans.

There were 12 mosques in Mitrovica before 1945, but the number fell to two currently, Imam Lushta deplored.

A Moroccan contigent is currently deployed in Kosovo to extend the local inhabitants humanitarian assistance.

Part of this action, Morocco decided to pay for the pilgrimage of 20 Kosovars to the Muslim holy shrines in Saudi Arabia.

The concerned persons will start the pilgrimage trip from Morocco with the official delegation that represents Morocco in the annual rituals, that start shortly after the end of Ramadan.

The move is made at the initiative of Prince Lalla Meriem, sister of King Mohammed VI. The princess heads the Moroccan National Committee of Support to Kosovo.
