The Lebanese army and Ein al-Helweh events
Lebanon, Politics, 1/3/2000
Lebanese security sources reported that armed Palestinian extremists had on late Sunday night deployed at one of the entrances of the Ein al-Helweh Palestinian refugee camp in south Lebanon near a position of the Lebanese army. No confrontations between the two sides were reported.
The same sources indicated that tens of extremists who are members of the Osbet al-Ansar al-Wahabeyah led by Abu Muhjin, who is wanted by the Lebanese law, had taken fighting positions after an attack using an explosive charge was made near a center for them but with no casualties reported.
The same sources continued that in retaliation the Lebanese soldiers had taken fighting positions at the entrance of the camp, and the Palestinians stayed in an alert position until Sunday at dawn but without an exchange of fire. They added that matters were restored to normalcy on Sunday morning after the armed men withdrew from the streets.
The Lebanese Army has control on all entrances to Ein al-Helweh camp which is close to Sidon, the main city in south Lebanon, but the Lebanese army has refrained from entering the camp for several years.
